Odissi dance is based on the devotion of Mahaprabhu Jagannath, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Torso movement is a very important and a distinctive feature of the Odissi style. In this the lower part of the body remains stationary and the torso moves from side to side parallel to the axis through the center of the upper part of the body. This requires special training for balance so any movement of the shoulders or hips is avoided. There are fixed foot movements with flat feet, toe or heel combination. It is used in a variety of complex combinations. There are also many possibilities of foot movements. Most of the foot movements are spiral or circular on the ground or in intervals. Apart from foot movements there is a variety of movements for jumps or turns and certain postures are inspired by sculpture. These are called Bhangi, it is a real combination of ending the movement in a certain posture. Hand gestures play an important role in both Nritta and Nritya.
